Direct Mail & Business Mailing Lists

Last week we discussed Occupant & Consumer Mailing Lists. I want to touch on Business Lists for a moment. I look forward to hearing your feedback so I can share it with the rest of our readers.

Below is a list of the three main types of mailing lists generally provided by commercial list vendors. Knowing more about these list types will help you begin to narrow down the demographic for your final mailing.

> Occupant
> Consumer
> Business

BUSINESS: This list includes addresses for businesses and has many various demographics to choose from. You may request the top contact for each address giving you the name of a person that may be responsible for decision making. Business lists may be separated based on the size of the company, the number of employees, gross sales, etc. Another way to narrow down your list is to request industry specific SIC codes such as Carpet Cleaners or Pizzeria's. Specialty business lists are very informative and may also include only growing businesses or home businesses.

As I have mentioned in some of my other blogs, this type of list will generally increase your postage rate to non-saturation but in certain mailings, it is better to pay a little more postage per piece then to use up your budget mailing to homes or apartments that would most likely never need your services. Increasing your ROI is important & narrowing down your mailing list is one way to do it.

Direct Mail & Consumer Mailing Lists

Yesterday we talked about Direct Mail and Occupant Mailing Lists but today we will discuss consumer lists. I look forward to hearing back from you with your feedback so I can share with the rest of our readers.

Below is a list of the three types of mailing lists that can be provided by commercial list vendors such as ourselves. Knowing more about these list types will help you begin to narrow down the demographics for your final mailing.

> Occupant
> Consumer
> Business

CONSUMER: This list includes addresses based on one or more specified demographics. A demographic is a marketing term used to describe a group you may or may not be your target market. These groups may be separated by age, income, gender, income level etc. These lists are developed based on the residents at a home addresses who have purchased specific merchandise or subscriptions, combined with various types of surveys etc. An example of this list may be to request a count for zip code 67211, 67208… income of 50K per year and above that have children living in the home.

One of the advantages of ordering a consumer list is you cut down on the possibilities of mailing to a home that is very unlikely to want your product. Such as you are selling new heating and air conditioning units for a special price but you mailing was delivered to an entire neighborhood that was built last year so there is no reason they would need to replace their equipment yet. The addressee generally includes the residents first and last name but you would add or CURRENT RESIDENT in case the resident had recently moved.

The postage for this type of list will increase because you are not likely saturating the entire postal carrier route, however, in most cases you will make up for the difference in postage by not spending money on the printing and postage costs of mailing to homes that will not purchase from.

Later this week I will discuss the remaining lists and their advantages & disadvantages. Feel free to email me directly if you have any further questions as well. EMAIL ROBIN FOR MORE INFO

This week’s discussion topic: Direct Mail & Occupant Mailing Lists

Direct Mail has always been a great way to get your message to your potential customers. I always get a lot of questions from new customers concerning the purchase of their mailing list and the need of an overall direction to get started. I thought this week we could discuss these questions and maybe get feedback from other customers who have some ideas on the subject as well.

Today I will begin by listing the three types of mailing lists that can be provided by commercial list vendors such as ourselves. Knowing more about these list types will help you begin to narrow down the demographics for your final mailing.

> Occupant
> Consumer
> Business

OCCUPANT: This list includes the address of every occupant (including homes, apartments, businesses, mobile homes, and PO Boxes) in a particular area. It comes pre-sorted and saturated by carrier route and guarantees the maximum postal discounts. You can request this list by zip code, city, or even run a radius around a specific address or zip code. You don't have to include every address in your zip code in your mailing but this could effect your postage rate. For instance if you are a carpet cleaning company you would most likely not want to mail to an apartment complex because the individual apartment residents don't hire carpet cleaning companies. If you order an occupant list you could request the apartments not be included in the count.

An advantage of ordering an occupant lists is they typically cost less than consumer or business lists. The addressee is generally CURRENT RESIDENT or CURRENT OCCUPANT but for an added cost you can request names where available. Another option is to request all the addresses be mailed to the same addressee title that will help connect the recipient with your company or restaurant such as "PIZZA LOVER".

The count report we supply with an occupant list includes valuable information about each carrier route. Median Income and Median Home Value of each route just to name a few. Reviewing this information as you make your decision is very helpful as choosing routes that fit your demographics will help you narrow down your count and save money from sending to homes or businesses that would normally not purchase from you.

Later this week I will discuss the remaining lists and their advantages & disadvantages. Feel free to email me directly if you have any further questions as well. EMAIL ROBIN FOR MORE INFO
